Statement: Inspired by Bernie Sanders and personal experiences, I will tirelessly propose and support progressive policy solutions to ever-increasing hardships faced by Washingtonians.

Jobs are what mattered most to everyone in the community I was raised in. Born into housing projects on Seattle’s Beacon Hill, I delivered newspapers with older siblings starting at age 7, did any odd jobs we could get, and we all entered the workforce as soon as legally allowed. Through hard work, help from great teachers, kind mentors, and much persistence, I was the first through college.

For a person coming from poverty, there is no real glory in moving out of a poor neighborhood and into a higher income when the path you took is being increasingly blocked for others trying to make their way up and out. We immediately need revolutionary changes to end the waste of precious talent and lives.

To ensure a well-educated, employable and engaged citizenry, we absolutely need to fully fund education from pre-K through high school and beyond into college and vocational training. We need education that isn’t based solely on test scores, and includes art, music and recess play. More revenue is required to make this happen.
